Founded in 1809 as the Halifax Fire Insurance Association, it was acquired by Dutch insurer Nationale-Nederlander (NN) to gain market share in Canada. Intact Insurance was previously known as ING Canada and owned by the ING Group, originally from Amsterdam. In 1991, NN merged with NMB Postbank to create the ING Group.
